TAMU
MANRRS Chapter Historical Information
(As Compiled by Wash A. Jones)
In 1992, Dr. Joe Townsend, Associate
Dean for Student Development in the College of Agriculture and Life
Sciences, started the Texas A&M Chapter. TAMU MANRRS Chapter
attended its first national MANRRS conference in 1993 in Huntsville,
Alabama (the conference was hosted by Alabama A&M University);
Verbal history from Vicky Ibarra, former chapter president, says
that it was TAMU that started the “tradition” of schools
wearing matching T-shirts to the conference on opening day.

TAMU MANRRS Chapter has earned a
reputation locally at the annual Whoopstock Unity Festival sponsored
by TAMU, and people look forward to having some of the best fajitas
around prepared by MANRRS on that day.
TAMU MANRRS Chapter hosted the first
Region IV Workshop in November 1999 at TAMU. Approximately 45 people
participated. Student chapter representatives were from TAMU-Kingsville,
Prairie View A&M University, and Southern University in Baton
Rouge, LA. National officers participating were President Carlos
Gonzalez (Texas A&M University); President-Elect Jane Ford (Alabama
A&M University); Graduate President Dexter
Wakefield (Purdue University); Regions IV and V Graduate Vice President
Greg Payne (University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign) and Undergraduate
Student President Charles Stewart (Iowa State University). Dow AgroSciences,
represented by Alvin Pierce, sponsored the workshop.
Texas A&M University has produced
several national leaders in MANRRS and has gained high respect from
others around the country. The Texas A&M University Chapter
was the first in the country to win Chapter of the Year for two
consecutive years (1994 and 1995). Instead of attempting a “three-peat”
the following year, the students decided that they wanted to focus
their efforts on hosting the 1996 national MANRRS conference. We
are proud to say that the 1996 Conference took the national organization
to a higher level, and hosts since that time have used the 1996
Conference as the standard to emulate or exceed.
The
MANRRS Chapter at Texas A&M University has won the award of
Chapter of the Year for 2003 and 2004. It is the only chapter in
the whole organization that has achieved this honor for two consecutive
years.
